BC Agriculture in the Classroom - Common Ground – The Strawberry Project
This year, Mr. Benvin and Ms. Nasuszny’s grade 5/6 class has been provided the opportunity to participate in a BC Agriculture in the Classroom project called the Common Ground – The Strawberry Project. This involves a series of activities where the students will be planting and growing wild and everbearing strawberries, engaging, learning and studying the growing process through a scientific lens. In addition, the project promotes community, leadership, sustainability, and connection to the local land.
One of the aims of this project is that through cultural exchanges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth on growing native plant species, and through topics relevant to sustainability, the students will be able to learn about agriculture in BC and the importance of local food sources, all while increasing engagement with Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Understanding.
Our class will be partnered with Gitanyow Independent School, from Kitwanga, BC, where we will be able to share our learnings through letters or virtual exchanges, fostering an appreciation of cultures in different communities through education and exchange.
During this program, we will be in communication with the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation, sharing our learning through photographs captured during the activities.
